Hyderabad is facing a potential flood threat from the Musi River, and residents in low-lying areas are concerned about the authorities’ preparedness. With the opening of two gates of Osman Sagar and ongoing water release from Himayat Sagar, people living on the riverbanks are worried about the situation in this monsoon season.

Local activist Syed Bilal has reported that no officials from Revenue or GHMC have visited the vulnerable areas to assess the situation. The only presence seen there are the police officers interacting with the residents. Bilal, who is the vice president of Human Rights Forum, expressed his frustration over the lack of communication from higher authorities.

The rising water flow near the small bridge at Malakpet indicates a potential risk of flooding in nearby areas. The locals are monitoring the water level closely, as once it surpasses the bridge, houses start getting flooded. For now, the water level has not reached that point, according to resident K Rammurthy.

Last year, during the same period, residents were alerted about potential flooding due to high inflows in Himayatsagar. Gates of Osmansagar were opened, and the outflows reached 1788 cusecs. The completion of SNDP works near Malakpet’s Railway under Bridge is expected to alleviate previous congestion points, but the effectiveness of recent desilting works will be tested as 45 settlements on the southern side remain at risk.
