Hyderabad: Dr. C. Rohin Reddy, the Khairtabad DCC President, criticized the BRS Government for the flooding caused by heavy rainfall in Hyderabad. He expressed concern over the unpreparedness of the GHMC and highlighted the waterlogging, flooding, traffic congestion, and clogged stormwater drains in Central Hyderabad. The accumulation of garbage worsened the situation, leading to severe damage to the local economy.

Rohin Reddy gave an example of Indira Nagar Colony in Khairtabad, where rainwater entered houses due to the absence of stormwater drains. He emphasized that waterlogging has become a recurring nightmare for Hyderabad residents. The insufficient drainage system cannot handle heavy downpours, causing flooded streets and submerged low-lying areas. This relentless rain damages homes and belongings, especially for vulnerable sections of society.

Despite claims made by Municipal Administration Minister K. Tarakarama Rao, no action has been taken to address the waterlogging problem on the Khairtabad-Punjagutta Road. The resulting traffic congestion disrupts the transportation system, making it difficult for residents, workers, and students to commute.

Rohin Reddy also highlighted the blockage of stormwater drains due to uncleared garbage. The negligence in waste disposal leads to blocked drains, worsening the issues caused by heavy rains. He stated that the authorities’ lack of preparedness and failure to take proactive measures indicate negligence. The drainage system needs improvement to ensure smooth flow of stormwater. The delay in garbage disposal and drain maintenance worsens the situation.

The Congress leader emphasized that water-related problems have consequences beyond inconvenience for residents. Hyderabad’s local economy suffers greatly, with small businesses, street vendors, and shops in low-lying areas forced to shut down or experience reduced footfall, resulting in financial losses. Daily wage earners who rely on consistent work opportunities are also affected by disruptions in transportation and commuting.

Rohin Reddy remarked that while the previous Congress Government made infrastructure improvements between 2004-2014, the BRS Government has neglected to make any additions in the last nine years. He demanded that Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao and other ministers visit the affected areas, activate local authorities, and take measures to prevent further damage.
