Opposition leaders gathered in Bengaluru to show their support against the NDA government at the Centre. During the meeting, they named their alliance as “I.N.D.I.A”. However, a complaint has been filed against these 26 parties for using the name ‘India’, as it is considered a breach of the Emblem Act 2022. This act prohibits the use of the name ‘India’ for personal interests to avoid hurting people’s sentiments.

The complaint includes the names of all 26 opposition parties who were present at the Bengaluru meeting. The opposition coalition, named I.N.D.I.A, stands for Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance. Their goal is to defeat the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

The complaint was lodged under Section 2(c) of the Emblems Act, which defines “name” to include any abbreviation of a name. Section 5 of the Emblems Act states that those who contravene the provisions of Section 3 may be fined ₹500. It is alleged that the 26 parties breached the law by referring to themselves as I.N.D.I.A. and should face punishment under Section 5.

The complainant, Dr. Avinish Mishra, expressed disappointment with the alliance’s name and urged appropriate action against the 26 parties. He believes that using the term ‘INDIA’ inappropriately during elections may hurt people’s feelings.
