A meeting of the United Opposition will take place in Bengaluru on Monday, July 17. Preparations for the meeting are underway and posters of the attending leaders are being put up around the city. Congress leader P Chidambaram stated that the party holds a unique position in the opposition and that a leader of the unified opposition will emerge at the right time.
Chidambaram expressed confidence in the opposition’s ability to challenge Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He also mentioned that the leader of the opposition against the Bharatiya Janata Party will come at an appropriate time. Chidambaram emphasized that the Congress has a special place among opposition groups, although it is not necessary to discuss it at this time.
He criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for bringing up the Delhi ordinance issue during an opposition meeting in Patna. Chidambaram stated that each subject will be decided on its merits and demerits at the right moment and place. He emphasized that the opposition parties are united against the social and economic policies of the BJP government, including concerns about poor economic development, inflation, unemployment, restrictions on civil liberties, pressure on the media, institutional weakness, and misuse of investigative agencies.
Chidambaram also expressed his concern about border security. He mentioned that these common concerns have brought the opposition parties together to challenge the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. With the upcoming elections, there is a strong motivation for the opposition parties to hold as many meetings as possible. Chidambaram believes that the conference in Bengaluru will be productive and we will have to wait and see what steps will be taken next.
