Chief Minister N. Biren Singh of Manipur has clarified that he will not be resigning from his position, putting an end to speculations about a leadership change. He made this announcement on Twitter following a day of suspense. There were reports and speculations that Singh would resign amidst ongoing ethnic violence in the region. However, when he tried to meet with Governor Anusuiya Uikey at the Raj Bhavan, he was prevented by a large crowd of people, mostly women, who surrounded his car and forced him to return. Some media outlets even displayed a purported resignation letter from Singh to the Governor.

Manipur Health and Family Welfare Minister Sapam Ranjan Singh stated that the Chief Minister was upset about recent incidents in Manipur and that they are now discussing the next steps. Some women holding banners and placards expressed their opposition to Singh’s resignation. The Chief Minister was scheduled to meet with the Governor at various times throughout the day, but no official confirmation or comment has been provided by Raj Bhavan sources regarding their meeting.

It is worth noting that Singh recently met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on June 25. During Shah’s visit to Manipur from May 29 to June 1, he announced several measures including the formation of a Commission of Inquiry, a CBI inquiry in six cases, the establishment of a Joint Security Command, and a relief package for victims and affected families. Meanwhile, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is currently touring the violence-hit state, visiting different districts and meeting with affected individuals.
