On Wednesday, Talcher observed a 12-hour bandh. The Talcher Zilla Kriyanusthan Committee called for the bandh to demand a separate district for Talcher. This is not the first time that a bandh has been observed for this cause. The committee has been staging a mass dharna for the last 184 days in front of the Sub-Collector’s office.

As a result of the bandh call, normal life was disrupted. Shops and business establishments remained closed and vehicular traffic was off the road. Government offices and banks were also closed. The production and dispatch of coal from Talcher coalfield were affected.

The committee convener, Keshav Bhutia, said that the bandh passed off peacefully. He also warned that if the government does not fulfil their demand, they will intensify their ongoing agitation.
