As the temperature rises in Kawal Tiger Reserve, the forest officials are taking steps to protect the health of the animals. Animals can get sick if they don’t have enough minerals like sodium, which they usually get from natural sources like rocks and mud. During the summer, there is a shortage of salt in the forest, which can make animals ill or even cause their death. That’s why it’s important to provide them with enough salt to stay healthy.

To do this, officials are creating salt licks using local materials like raw salt and tank silt or clay soils. They mix 70% raw salt and 30% tank silt or clay soils to create a small mound near a water body. Animals visit these mounds and instinctively lick the salt, which helps replenish their bodies with essential minerals. This simple behavior promotes their overall health and well-being.

In the past, officials used to get salt from chemical companies, but this was harmful to the animals. Now they are using natural materials to ensure the animals receive safe and beneficial salt. It’s important to make sure animals get enough salt and other minerals as a deficiency can lead to decreased fertility, weakened immune systems, impaired growth, and cognitive functions. Ensuring an adequate intake of salt and minerals is crucial for their well-being and optimal functioning.
