KT Rama Rao, Telangana IT Minister and Bharat Rashtra Samithi working president, expressed concern that the delimitation of Lok Sabha seats after 2026 would be unfair to southern states if based on population. The BJP-led government plans to take up this process if they retain power in the 2024 general elections. The new Parliament building has thrice the number of seats, with enough space for 888 members, while the new Rajya Sabha can seat 384 members.
KT Rama Rao believes that it is unfair and painful that southern states may receive fewer Lok Sabha seats due to the delimitation. Meanwhile, states in the northern region benefit from an increase in seats despite not controlling their population. Southern states like Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana have done well in population control and will now be penalised. KT Rama Rao claims that southern states contribute 35% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) with only 18% of the population.
KT Rama Rao calls on leaders and people of southern states to speak out against this injustice beyond politics.
