A man from Agra was diagnosed with alcohol allergy by Dr Vyakaranam Nageshwar at a private allergy centre in Hyderabad. The man, who we will call John, got very sick after drinking alcohol at a party and went to Aswini Allergy Centre for help. He went through a test where he had to drink the alcohol he suspected caused his reaction in a supervised setting. This test is called an Alcohol Oral Challenge Test. John tested positive for alcohol allergy, and he was one of the first cases of this kind in the world.

Dr Nageshwar said that thousands of people suffer from alcohol allergies without knowing they have this condition. He explained that there had been around 100 cases of alcohol allergies published worldwide so far. To perform the test, John had to bring the bottle of alcohol that made him feel sick. A small amount was put on his arm to see if it caused a reaction. Symptoms of alcohol allergy include flushing, redness, rashes, heaviness in the head and chest, dry cough, and giddiness. After his reaction, John was rushed to a hospital and stayed there for 12 hours before being discharged.

Two months later, John tried drinking alcohol again, and he had the same reaction. The test confirmed that he was allergic to whiskey. It also showed that he had high blood histamine levels, high sensitization to other things like peanuts, chicken, dust mites, and mosquitoes. John also had undiagnosed asthma and allergic urticaria, as shown by a lung function test.

Dr Nageshwar advised patients to keep an eye on allergic symptoms and avoid the brand of alcohol that causes their reaction. He also said patients should dilute their alcohol before drinking it and avoid foods that are high in histamines. Patients should avoid alcohol with cork-based lids and take antihistamine tablets before drinking to lessen their symptoms.
