Violent clashes between different communities in Manipur have led to the deployment of 10,000 soldiers from the Army and Assam Rifles. The clashes began on Wednesday between the Meitei community and Naga and Kuki tribals. The violence has resulted in the displacement of over 9,000 people from their homes. Multiple sources have reported several deaths and nearly 100 injuries. The police have yet to confirm these reports.
On Friday, intermittent gunfights were reported in the morning hours from various hill districts surrounding the Imphal Valley. However, a wary peace seems to be reigning in the valley. Nearly 20 fresh companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), including the CRPF and BSF, have been deployed to the state. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is closely monitoring the situation and is in constant touch with top functionaries of the state and central governments.
The Army’s Sikh regiment is currently carrying out rescue operations in Langol in Imphal West district, shifting over 500 people to safe shelters in the Leimakhong army camp. Due to the prevailing situation, trains to Manipur have been cancelled with immediate effect on Friday.
