An 11-year-old girl died after she fell into a pit on a road near her home in Hyderabad during heavy rain. She was washed away in the drain at Secunderabad. The girl had gone out with her brother to buy milk. The State Government aims to make the city one of the top 30 in the world, but poor infrastructure causes such incidents. The city is experiencing unseasonal rains, and the GHMC has yet to start pre-monsoon works like desilting of nalas. The mayor of GHMC, Vijayalakshmi, has suspended two officials and given the girl’s family an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh. This incident has led to a war of words between BJP and BRS. Union Minister G Kishan Reddy alleged that lack of coordination between GHMC and the water board caused the girl’s death. Animal Husbandry Minister T Srinivas Yadav asked Reddy to state what he has done as Member of Parliament during the last four years. Despite no one taking responsibility, massive works are happening in the city under the Strategic Nala Development Programme.
