Hyderabad’s biodiversity has improved over the last 9 years, according to the City Biodiversity Index 2022 released by Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Minister K.T. Rama Rao. The index, also known as the Singapore Index, is used to monitor, conserve and develop biodiversity in cities. Hyderabad received 57 out of 92 marks, compared to 36 in 2012, due to initiatives such as Haritha Haram, urban parks, and the rejuvenation of water bodies and forests. The city is home to 1,350 water bodies and important rock formations covering 1,600 hectares. Protection of natural biodiversity led to improved ranks in the latest index.

There are 1305 species of plants in Hyderabad, 577 of which are native and 728 introduced. The city is home to a variety of odonates, butterflies, spiders, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. KTR praised officials for preparing a Hyderabad-specific Biodiversity Index and stated that biodiversity is crucial in becoming a world-class city. He urged officials to develop a five-year action plan to enhance biodiversity and organize World Environment Day on a large scale. The Haritha Awards will be presented to the best-performing municipality and municipal officers and staff who contribute to increasing green coverage.
