Former Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit, the country’s highest honor, by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Merkel, who was the first female leader of Germany, stepped down in December 2021 after 16 years in power. The award ceremony took place in Schloss Bellevue, Berlin and was attended by current Chancellor Olaf Scholz, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and former national football coach Juergen Klinsmann.

During the event, Merkel spoke about her experiences in politics, which she called a “snakepit.” She is known for leading Germany through various crises, including the global financial crisis, eurozone debt crisis, and COVID-19 pandemic. However, she has also faced criticism for her stance towards Russia and her decisions to open Germany’s borders to refugees in 2015 and to phase out nuclear power.

Only two former Chancellors of Germany have received the honor before Merkel – Konrad Adenauer and Helmut Kohl. Despite criticism of her policies, Merkel’s achievements were recognized by many and celebrated at the award ceremony.
