The Islamic holy month of Ramzan is set to begin on March 24 (Friday) as the crescent moon was not sighted on Wednesday. This announcement was made by the MarkaziRuet-e-Hilal Committee, which is the central moon sighting committee. The sighting of the crescent moon marks the beginning of the holy month of Ramzan, and since it has not been sighted, Thursday, March 23, will be the last day of the month of Shaban, and Ramzan will start from Friday.

The Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle or phases of the moon, which is why the date for Ramzan fasting changes yearly. The begin and end of Ramzan depend upon the sighting of the crescent moon. Usually, the crescent of Ramzan is first sighted in Saudi Arabia along with some Western countries, and then usually a day later in the rest of India and other countries.
