A train accident happened in Balasore, Odisha. The Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, and a goods train were involved. Over 200 people have died and 900 were injured. The death count is currently at 233. The accident happened around 7 pm on Friday. Rescue efforts are underway with the help of three NDRF units, four Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force units, over 15 fire rescue teams, 30 doctors, 200 police personnel, and 60 ambulances.
The Chief Secretary of Odisha, Pradeep Jena, said that they are trying to cut the only severely damaged bogie left. The Union Railway Minister, Ashwani Vaishnav, has asked political parties not to politicize the incident and focus on rescue and healthcare for the injured. A high-level committee has been formed to investigate the accident. It is too early to know the cause of the accident or if it was due to negligence.
