The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) is facing various challenges in 2024. The Lok Sabha elections are expected to take place in April, and the Maharashtra Assembly elections will be held before October. The party needs to come up with strategies to strengthen itself for the Lok Sabha elections and prevent any members from leaving the party. Additionally, it should also work on expanding its influence in neighboring states like Maharashtra.
The BRS, previously known as TRS, aimed to become a national party but faced a setback in the recent Assembly seats where it only won 39 out of 119 seats. In the last Lok Sabha elections, the party aimed for 16 seats but only won 9. Now, the challenge is to retain those 9 seats and try to improve their performance.
To prepare for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the party has decided to hold meetings for the constituencies starting from January 3. One of the main issues for the party is whether or not to contest elections in other states. They had previously announced their intention to contest in Maharashtra and even appointed party committees there.
However, the BRS is also facing some internal problems as some leaders from the districts are leaving the party and joining Congress. Municipal Chairpersons are facing no-confidence motions after completing their four-year terms, and there are speculations that a few MLAs may switch over to Congress as well. These speculations persist despite the denials from the MLAs who had previously left Congress to join BRS.
Furthermore, the local body elections will be a test for the party to maintain its unity. While BRS had won a majority of municipalities in the 2020 elections, it may be challenging to maintain that record this time, according to party leaders.
