The Telangana government honored 105 families for donating organs and saving lives. They organized a ceremony to recognize these families on the 13th National Organ Donation Day at Rabindra Bharati. Health Minister T Harish Rao paid tribute to these noble families who donated organs under the Jeevandan program. He congratulated the department for being recognized by the Centre as the state with the highest number of organ donations.
Rao praised the families for their courage and compassion in choosing to save lives through organ donation despite their own grief. He acknowledged them as a source of inspiration and commended their commitment to social responsibility. Their selfless acts have given a new lease of life to many people.
Telangana is leading in organ donation with 194 people donating organs in 2022. Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Gujarat followed with 156, 151, and 148 donations respectively. The Jeevandan program, started in 2013, has witnessed a total of 1,288 brain death donations, resulting in the transplantation of 4,829 organs. Telangana also ranks first in organ transplant treatments with 530 surgeries performed in 2022.
Rao emphasized the need for greater awareness and participation in organ donation. While progress has been made, there are still approximately 3,000 individuals actively seeking organ transplants. He urged everyone to recognize the value of human organs and the importance of fulfilling social responsibility through organ donation.
Rao called upon people to embrace organ donation as a means to extend a lifeline to those in need. He emphasized the powerful impact of this compassionate act.
